Somerdale Sweet Red Grass-Fed Cheddar
Candy is not the only sweet thing for Halloween and the month of October. Somerdale has a “sweet” grass-fed cheddar who’s color fits the season perfectly – pumkin orange. This is actually the cheese of the month on sale at the Augusta Whole Foods Market for $12.99/lb. You can take home a decently sized wedge for around 4 dollars or so, which is very reasonable when considering the depth of flavor that this Somerdale cheese contains.
The pate is slightly spongy with a bit of crumbliness expected from a cheddar aged 9-12 months. Coming from grass-fed dairy cows, this English Cheddar has a tang, but with a sweet buttercream note that sincerely makes your tastebuds second guess themselves. A fine contrast indeed. You can certainly taste the natural sugars from the milk, and a slight hint of saltiness finishes off each bite. This is not a ‘smelly’ cheese and is pleasant in appearance. Darker in hue than most orange cheddars, the “red” coloration is a noticable characteristic that sets it apart even before sampling. A medium-bodied, pumpkin spice ale or earthy zinfandel would pair nicely with this cheese. For food pairing suggestions, try salty cured meats, rich figs, or dried fruits. Give this October treat a try and let me know what you think. Cheers!
